The Magic of a Simmer Pot
Nov 26, 2022Hey, Soul Sister!
Whether you are a seasoned wise & wild woman exercising versatility with her gifts and witchy talents..
Or at the beginning of your journey, there is an ancient hearth practice that is very powerful, yet easy. Two words - Simmer Pot.
I made a beautiful simmer pot for the autumn equinox, and am deeply contemplating what I will put together for the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn Solstice. This practice helps you to weave festive and cultural folklore into your current traditions.
If you are looking for ways to gently expand your practices - this is it!
The history of simmer pots
Simmer pots date back to the times when the hearth was the center of the home. Times when humans lived with the land, the sky, and four elements. Plants, herbs, and spices were relied upon for not only nourishment, but medicine for the body, mind, and spirit.
The simmer pot would rest at the hearth, warming throughout the day, and filling the home with the sacred essence of your natural surroundings, depending on the season of the year.
When should you do a simmer pot?
You can put together a simmer pot anytime you feel inspired, but they are most likely utilized for a specific purpose. This can be a New or Full Moon, one of the eight Sabbats, or to set a specific intention, such as protection or healing.
It’s also a perfect smoke-free option if you are sensitive to incense or candles, and you can compost what’s left!
What is a simmer pot used for?
Most traditional simmer pots are assembled to support an intention, such as abundance, cleansing, protection, love, or healing.
I invite you lean deeply into the intuition of your inner wise & wild woman to guide the process. You have most likely done this before, even if it wasn’t in this life. It is an excellent way to channel your creativity and connection to the medicine of nature, while nourishing your home.
This type of kitchen/hearth magic also incorporates the four elements of air, fire, water, and earth. When integrating the four elements into your work you are balancing and harmonizing the foundations of alchemy. Astrology is the oldest science in our world, second is alchemy.
- Fire: Purifying, igniting, cleansing. It is passionate.
- Air: Intellectual, thought, ideas. It is expansive.
- Water: Emotions, creativity, imagination. It is permeating.
- Earth: Grounding, secure, stable. It is supportive.
Make Your Own Simmer Pot
-
Choose a large pot or cauldron and fill it with water ⅔ of the way full.
-
Based on the intention and purpose for your simmer pot, choose herbs, plants, and spices that call to you.
-
Learn a little about the choices that you have made. For instance, salt can be protective and cleansing, and thyme and cloves can attract prosperity.
-
Once you have gathered your ingredients, take some time to connect with them. Consider where they grow, how they grow, what they offer, and how they will incorporate their mystical magic into your home and life.
-
Begin heating your pot of water to a boil and then reducing the heat. Slowly and carefully add your ingredients, trusting your intuition and finding a natural rhythm to your divine arrangement.
-
Once you have arranged everything in the pot of water, speak out loud your intentions and purpose. Feel it with love in your heart, and express great gratitude towards it.
-
Allow a gentle simmer, but not a rolling boil. Simmering should be enough to fill your home with the blissful fragrances of the pot, but you can slowly increase heat to match your desired level of fragrance.
-
Add more water to the pot throughout the day if needed. The idea of a simmer pot is not only the intentions you set, but to accommodate the pot throughout the day with patience. Nurturing it and tending to it as necessary.
